Softball gets split at Presbyterian behind Phelps' shutout

CLINTON, SC -- Catawba College and host Presbyterian split a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader at the PC Softball Complex on Monday afternoon. Catawba took the opener 1-0, while the Blue Hose won the second game 5-2. Catawba snaps a four game losing streak and now stands at 20-18 overall and 5-5 in the SAC. The five league wins mark the most for the Lady Indians since recording seven in the 1994 season. Presbyterian moves to 24-24-1 and 6-4. In the opener, Lady Indian sophomore pitcher Katie Phelps (Prince Frederick, MD) scattered seven hits and shutout the Blue Hose to give Catawba the 1-0 edge and improve her record to 5-4. Presbyterian freshman Samantha Slater (Westerville, OH) also pitched well, giving up only five hits and one earned run, but took the loss and falls to 10-7. The lone run of the game came in the sixth inning when Amanda Myers (Lynchburg, VA) singled down the left field line with two outs to score Jessica Rivera (Key West, FL), who had doubled with one out. PCs offense had multiple chances throughout the game, putting runners on the bases in five out of seven innings, but was unable to capitalize on the scoring opportunities leaving nine on base. Catawba grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the second game. Rivera delivered a two-out RBI double and then scored on a single by Jenn Ropp (Broadway, VA). The Blue Hose put a lone run on the board in the second inning on a single by Haley Brooks (Tifton, GA) and then another three runs in the third inning. The initial batter of the third for Presbyterian reached after striking out and an error with the bases loaded brought home the first run. A passed ball allowed another to score, then another error helped plate the third run. Brooke Norris (Anderson, SC) earned the win as she scattered five hits and struck out four batters to improve to 11-15 overall. Megan Wilson (Stuart, VA) took the loss for Catawba, giving up one earned run off eight hits and falls to 5-10 on the season. #####
