Indians Rout Newberry in Heated 4-0 Match
NEWBERRY, SC -- The Catawba College Men's Soccer team recorded an impressive 4-0 victory over Newberry College Wednesday afternoon at the Smith Road Complex. Catawba improves to 2-2 on the season and 1-0 in the South Atlantic Conference. Newberry falls to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the SAC.
Fouls played a key role in game as Newberry recieved six yellow cards, resulting in a red card of one player. Newberry finished the first half with 12 fouls and three yellow cards, including one for Nico Vallejos.
Catawba jumped on the opportunity in the second half when Florida Golf Coast transfer, Sam Boggs, tallied his first goal of the season just 16 seconds into the second half. Almost two minutes later, a Catawba free kick resulted in an own goal for the Wolves, giving Catawba a 2-0 advantage.
The intensity return for both sides as Catawba recieved its first yellow card in the 52nd minute and two Newberry recorded two more of their own. The second yellow card came at the 57th minute to Vallejos forcing the Wolves to play a man down for the remainder of the match.
In the 60th minute of play, Catawba senior Kenny Bonilla drilled in a free kick from 28 yards out. Kevin Scott sealed the fate of Newberry after converting a penalty kick in the 82nd minute.
Newberry committed 24 fouls in the match to Catawba's 18. Despite being shutout Newberry tallied 15 shots while Catawba was credited with 18.
Catawba keeper recorded the shutout with five saves in the game. Brad Dimon took the loss in net for Newberry with six saves in the game.
Catawba will return to the pitch on Saturday as they host Mars Hill at Frock Field. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
