Baseball out-duels St. Andrews for 3-1 winSALISBURY, NC – Catawba got outstanding efforts from six pitchers as the Indians defeated visiting St. Andrews 3-1 in baseball action on Wednesday night at Newman Park. Catawba improves to 27-21 with the win, while the Knights fall to 22-23. Tribe starter Matt Fairweather (Lenoir, NC) tossed five innings, allowing just three hits and a single run with four strikeouts and no walks. The lone Knight run of the game came on a one-out home run by Demetrius Jordan (Wilmington, NC). Catawba would scratch out a run in the second to even the game. Aaron Rimer (Salisbury, NC) drew a leadoff walk, while Blair Reynolds (King, NC) was hit by a pitch. After a Chad Hill (Bennett, NC) sacrifice, Andrew Daywalt (Mocksville, NC) plated the Tribe run with a grounder to short. Catawba took the lead in the fifth, stringing together three consecutive hits with two outs. Jeff Boyles (Pinnacle, NC) started the rally, moved to third on a hit by Nick Lefko (Faith, NC) and scored on a single by Mark Smith (Browns Summitt, NC). The Tribe added an insurance run in the seventh as Boyles was hit by a pitch to open the frame and later scored on a two-out throwing error. After Fairweather left the game, freshman Scott Dunning (Matthews, NC) pitched a perfect inning, as did Travis Allen (Mocksville, NC) in the seventh. Allen gave up a leadoff single to Rob Slack (Deltona, FL), but Jeff Abdelnour (Cohees, NY) retired the one batter he faced and Spencer Anthony (Charlotte, NC) worked out of a second and third jamb with a strikeout and a groundout. St. Andrews threatened in the ninth as Casey Clary (Wilmington, NC) singled with one out to chase Anthony. Jason Catlin (Wilmington, NC) greeted Tribe reliever Jake Talley (Royersford, PA) with a double down the left field line, but pinch runner Matt Jordan (Wilmington, NC) was thrown out at the plate trying to score from first. Talley would induce Brandon Taylor (Laurinburg, NC) to ground out to end the game. Bert Gore (Vilas, NC) took the loss for St. Andrews. He went the distance and allowed just six hits and only two runs were earned. Gore recorded seven strikeouts. Catawba’s Lefko was the only player on either team to collect more than one hit as he went 2-for-3. #####
