Indians Power Past Johnson C. Smith With 9-0 Victories
CHARLOTTE, NC -- The Catawba College tennis teams each claimed 9-0 victories over Johnson C. Smith Saturday morning at the Coleman-Cuthbertson Tennis Complex. The Catawba women improve to 3-0 on the season while the men advance to 1-1. The match marked the season opener for each Golden Bulls team.
In women's action the duo of Liz Renteria and Erisa Onchi claimed #1 doubles with an 8-0 victory. Kristen Rocko and Lauren Sledd were just as dominate at #2 doubles with an 8-1 win. Maddie Henderson and Rachel Rudisill won at the third flight by defualt.
In singles action the Catawba women never let up with three sets of 6-0, 6-0 victories. Renteria and Onchi claimed the first two shutouts at #1 and #2 singles, respectively.Rudisill claimed the third shutout at the fifth position. Rocko won #3 singles with 6-0, 6-1 victories. Sledd reversed that score with 6-1, 6-0 wins at #4. Emily Corcoran won at the #6 position when Johnson C. Smith couldn't field a player for the final spot.
On the men's side, Lucas Miller and Mitchell McDonald took the #1 doubles 8-0 while Jack Mordey and Aaron Vanhorenbeck won #2 8-1. Lucca Picca and Michael Patch shutout thier #3 opponents 8-0.
In men's single action Mordey at #1, Patch at #4, McDonald at #5, and Iago Montero Nunez at #6 each claimed 6-0, 6-0 victories. Miller and Picca tallied 6-0, 6-1 wins at #2 and #3 positions, respectively.
Catawba returns to action on Wednesday when they travel to Barton for a 2:00 p.m. match.
