Volleyball Rallies Past Lincoln Memorial in Four-Set Win
SALISBURY, N.C -- Catawba outlasted visiting Lincoln Memorial to take a four-set win in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians improved to 5-6 overall and 2-2 in the SAC, winning by the scores of 25-23, 25-20, 23-25, 25-22. The Lady Railsplitters fall to 3-4 and 1-3.
Catawba got double-figure kill matches from Alex Hopper (Madison, N.C./McMichael HS), Audrey Hoffman (Dacula, Ga./Mill Creek HS) and McKenzie Garrison (Newton, N.C./Maiden HS) in the win. Hopper had 15 kills and four blocks, Hoffman 12 kills and six blocks and Garrison 11 kills and 13 digs. Setter Kaytee Frabotta (Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II HS) dished out 50 assists with 17 digs and three blocks, while libero Evan Schultz (Richmond, Va./Monacan HS) collected 25 digs.
Catawba led 16-12 in the opening set before LMU rallied back to tie things at 17-all. A couple kills from Hopper and one from Hoffman helped the Lady Indians go up 23-20. Again, LMU responded and tied the set at 23-all on a Catawba hitting error. Garrison got Catawba to set point with a kill and an error from LMU gave Catawba the set.
A 6-2 run midway through the second set gave Catawba a 13-8 lead. The Lady Railsplitters cut the deficit to 14-13, but Catawba never gave up the lead and a kill from Rachel Gallup (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland HS) restored an 18-14 lead. An ace by Schultz made the score 20-16 and a kill from Garrison put Catawba up 22-17. Hoffman killed off the set point.
Consecutive kills from Danielle Ged gave LMU an early 4-1 lead in set three. Catawba rallied to lead 16-15 before Lincoln Memorial spurted out to a 21-17 lead after a kill and ace from Brooke Fleeman and a kill from Jazzy Oates. Catawba clawed back to take a 23-22 lead, but LMU ran off the final three points, the last two on kills from Ged and Kiera Holland.
LMU rode that momentum to an 11-3 edge early in set four. Down 18-10, Catawba began its winning rally. A kill and ace from Erin Morant (Bealeton, Va./Liberty HS) cut the margin to 18-13. A kill from Rachel Stanford (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee HS) got the Lady Indians within 19-16, but a kill from Oates helped push the LMU lead to 21-16.
Hoffman and Garrison put down Catawba kills and after back-to-back aces from Allison Benton (High Springs, Fla./St. Francis HS), the Lady Indians were down just 21-20. Hoffman followed with a block and a kill and Catawba led 22-21. A combo block from Hoffman and Garrison was followed by a LMU error for a 24-21 edge. Fleeman fought off one set point for LMU, but Garrison ended it with a kill.
Oates led LMU with 14 kills, while Holland added 11 kills and 12 digs. Setter Abby Cash had 44 assists, 15 digs, five blocks, three aces and four kills in a losing effort.
Catawba continues its six game home stand, hosting Queens on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
