Indians Fall In Heartbreaking Overtime Loss to Mars Hill
SALISBURY, NC -- The Catawba College men's soccer team suffered a 2-1 overtime loss in South Atlantic Conference action Saturday night at Frock Field. The loss drops Catawba to 2-3 on the season and 1-0-1 in conference play. Mars Hill improves to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the SAC.
Mars Hill drew first blood in the game with a goal in the 51st minute of the game. The kick from Robert Taylor on the right side of the box beat Catawba keeper Chrstian Watts.
The Indians evened the score in the 69th minute of play when Tobias Iriah fed the ball to a charging Kenny Bonilla on the left side of the box. Bonilla's goal was his third of the season with Iriah tallying his first assist of the year.
The final goal of the night came with 1:39 left in the first overtime period. Mars Hill's Stian Sanner raced down a long ball cleared by the Lion's defense. The foot race was won by Sanner who lobbed the ball over a charging Watts' head and forwarded into the net for the victory.
Watts finished the night recording four saves. His Mars Hill counterpart, Connor Talbot finished with three saves in the game.
The contest was physically played with Catawba committing 16 fouls with Mars Hill called for 13. Seven yellow cards were issued in the game. Mars Hill received three yellow and Catawba drew four.
Catawba will return to action on Wednesday as they host Lenoir-Rhyne at Frock Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
