Volleyball Attack Cooled by Queens in Four-Set Loss

SALISBURY, N.C -- Queens knocked off host Catawba in four sets in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Tuesday night at Goodman Gym.  The Royals won by the scores of 25-17, 25-21, 25-27, 25-17 to improve to 3-6 overall and 2-3 in the SAC.  The Catawba Indians fell to 5-7 and 2-3.

Meredith Jones led a balanced Queens attack with 13 kills.  Jessica Rains totaled a dozen kills with four blocks, while Rebecca Cochran collected 11 kills and four blocks.  Taylor Henry posted seven blocks and Elizabeth Bialkowski five. 

Catawba got nine kills from Alex Hopper (Madison, N.C./McMichael HS) and eight from McKenzie Garrison (Newton, N.C./Maiden HS).  Setter Kaytee Frabotta (Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II HS) handed out 27 assists with 15 digs and five kills.  Evan Schultz (Richmond, Va./Monacan HS) totaled 26 digs with a pair of aces.

Queens turned around a 13-8 deficit in the first set, running off nine of 10 points to go on top 17-14.  With a 19-17 advantage, the Royals won the final six points to close out the set.

Catawba trailed in the second set 15-12 before rallying back to lead 18-16.  Garrison had a pair of kills in the run.  Tied at 19-all, Queens used a four-point run to move ahead.  Henry had a kill and block in the run for the Royals.  Henry teamed with Raines for a block on set point.

The Lady Indians went up 14-10 in set three on a block, kill and ace from Allison Benton (High Springs, Fla./St. Francis HS).  Queens used a 7-2 spurt to lead 23-21.  Three straight Catawba points were followed by two from Queens to give the Royals a 25-24 edge.  Three Queens errors followed and Catawba took the set.

Queens ran out to a 6-1 lead in the fourth set.  Catawba got within 13-10 on an ace from Erin Morant (Bealeton, Va./Liberty HS).  Leading 15-11, Queen scored seven of the next nine points to go up 22-13 and went on to take the match.

Catawba is back in league action on Friday as the Lady Indians host Tusculum at 7 p.m.
