Softball shutout twice by league-leading Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, TN -- Catawba College dropped both ends of a doubleheader to league-leading Carson-Newman on Wednesday afternoon in South Atlantic Conference softball action at the C-N softball complex. The Lady Eagles won by the scores of 4-0 and 6-0 and improved to 28-9 overall and 9-1 in the SAC. Catawba fell to 20-20 and 5-7. Carson-Newman scored single runs in four different innings to record its game one win. Mary Roberts (Knoxville, TN) squeezed home a run in the second, while Brooke Randolph (Chattanooga, TN) doubled home a run in the third for a 2-0 lead. Cristi Benton (Snellville, GA) would double home runs the fourth and sixth innings to give the Lady Eagles a 4-0 edge. Catawba managed just five hits off Lady Eagle pitcher Marci Mitchell (Lithonia, GA), who struck out seven in the shutout. Shannon Handy (Advance, NC) scattered eight hits in taking the loss for the Lady Indians. The Lady Eagles broke open the second game with a four-run fifth to take a 5-0 lead. An Erin Rutherford (Knoxville, TN) single in the first put Carson-Newman up 1-0. Rutherford would double home a pair in the fifth. Megan Elliott (East Ridge, TN) took a no-hitter into the sixth, but Ashlee Rhoades (China Grove, NC) broke up the bid with a leadoff single. Elliott would surrender just two hits with one strike out. #####
