Indians Downed in Double Overtime to Lenoir-Rhyne
SALISBURY, NC -- The Catawba College men's soccer team suffered its second straight overtime defeat in a 3-2 loss to Lenoir-Rhyne in South Atlantic Conference action Wednesday night at Frock Field. With the loss Catawba falls to 2-4 on the season and 1-2 in the South Atlantic Conference. The Lenoir-Rhyne Bears improve to 4-1-1 overall and 2-0 in the SAC.
The game winner came in the 107th minute of play. Daniel Williams drove in the shot from the top of the box to beat Catawba keeper Christian Watts.
Catawba battled back twice to force overtime in the match. Lenoir-Rhyne went into halftime with a 1-0 advantage after a Raffaele Di puorto goal in the 44th minute.
In the second half, Catawba evened the score after Breki Bjarnason played the ball into forward Kenny Bonilla. The senior drilled in the shot from the right side to curve around a diving goalie.
The tie lasted for ten minutes before Eric Elder would retake the lead for the Bears. In the 83rd minute, Matt Wilkinson force the overtime play with a long, low driving shot from outside the top of the box. Wilkinson’s kick landed just inside post.
Lenoir-Rhyne finished the match with 14 shots on the night while Catawba took four. The Bears also held a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks. Watts recorded seven saves while Lenoir-Rhyne’s keeper Zach King allowed both Catawba shots on goal to score.
Catawba will travel to Coker on Saturday for a 7:00 p.m. match.
