Volleyball Storms Back From Two-Set Hole Against Tusculum
SALISBURY, N.C -- Catawba rallied back from two sets down to knock off Tusculum in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians claimed a 24-26, 15-25, 25-23, 25-13, 15-9 win to improve to 6-7 overall and 3-3 in the SAC. The Pioneers fell to 5-4 and 3-3.
Alex Hopper (Madison, N.C./McMichael HS) put down 15 kills, while McKenzie Garrison (Newton, N.C./Maiden HS) added 10 kills, 15 digs and three blocks for Catawba. The Lady Indians totaled 12 blocks with Bri Howard (Graham, N.C./S. Alamance HS) recording six and Erin Morant (Bealeton, Va./Liberty HS) five.
The teams went back-and-forth in the final set as it was tied seven times when the score reached 9-9. After a service error, Howard was in on three blocks to send Catawba up 13-9. Following a hitting error, Rachel Gallup (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland HS) killed off the final point of the comeback.
Tusculum had led early at 5-3, but two points from the Lady Indians with the last on a kill from Hopper tied the set. Kills from Garrison and Howard offset Tusculum points before a block from Hopper put Catawba on top 9-8. Rachel Garnett had a kill from Tusculum to tie the set, but that was the last point from the Pioneers as Catawba scored the final six points.
Morant added nine kills for Catawba with Howard and Gallup each totaling eight. Setter Kaytee Frabotta (Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II HS) picked up 43 assists with 10 digs, three blocks and four kills. Libero Evan Schultz (Richmond, Va./Monacan HS) collected 28 digs.
Sarah Bouley led Tusculum with 14 kills and added 14 digs. Garnett totaled 12 kills, while Sabrina Schleuger had 11 kills and four blocks. Hannah Berling handed out 40 assists and libero Melissa Mazur recorded 25 digs.
In the opening set, Catawba had four set points. Hopper killed a point for a 24-20 lead, but Tusculum stormed back. A kill from Bouley and two from Laryssa Welch cut the margin to 24-23. Catawba followed with three errors as the Pioneers took the set.
Catawba led set two 13-9 before Tusculum ran away, scoring 16 of the final 18 points. Seven straight points put the Pioneers up 16-13 then after Howard killed a point to cut the lead to 17-15, Tusculum ran off the final eight points. Bouley had a kill and two aces in the final run, while Schleuger was in on two blocks with Welch.
The Lady Indians used another good start to the third set, building a 16-9 edge after a run of three kills in four points by Hopper. Howard's kill had the Lady Indians up 19-15, but Tusculum scored three straight, the last two on kills from Mariah Lewis. Kills from Morant and Hopper put Catawba up 24-21 then got the win on a kill from Hopper after two TC points.
Catawba broke away from an 11-9 lead to roll in the fourth set. Gallup had four kills in a run that saw the Lady Indians go up 20-12. The Lady Indians raced away, scoring the final five points and force the deciding set.
Catawba next takes on Mars Hill at Goodman Gym on Saturday at 1 p.m.
