Baker's two-our homer helps Baseball to split at BartonWILSON, NC -- Barton rallied from a 5-0 deficit to win game one, while Catawba rallied from two-runs down and a pitch away from defeat as the teams split a baseball doubleheader on Tuesday at Fleming Stadium. Barton captured the first game, 7-5, then lost the second, 9-6 in eight innings. Barton is now 27-14, while the Indians are 26-21. Barton was down 5-0 in the opener, but erupted for four runs in the bottom of the fourth on four hits. Chris Scott and Justin Wilkes singled, while Eric McInerny was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Dennis Blackmon drove in two runs with a double and Tyler Petty plated two more with a single. The Bulldogs added three more runs in the sixth inning on three hits, two errors and a fielder’s choice. Scott McIver got the win in two innings of relief work. Kevin Dunn and Will Tyson pitched earlier. Barton finished with eight hits and two errors while the Indians tallied seven hits and committed three errors. Blackmon rapped out two hits for the Bulldogs, while Scott Searles (Boston, MA), returning from a knee injury, and Andrew Daywalt (Mocksville, NC) notched two hits apiece for Catawba. Matt Baker (Charlotte, NC) homered for the Indians. In the second game, Catawba trailed 4-2 after six innings. In the top of the seventh, Spence Southard (Greensboro, NC) reached on a two-out error and scored on a one-ball, two-strikes homer to left field by Baker, off McIver, who had come on in relief in the sixth. With the game tied at 7-7, Barton couldn’t manufacture a run in the bottom of the seventh. Catawba proceeded to rap out six hits and score five runs in the extra inning. Aaron Rimer (Salisbury< NC) homered to right, Blair Reynolds (King, NC) doubled and scored on another homer, this one by Daywalt. That chased McIver (8-5) in favor of Matt Kennedy, who gave up a triple to Southard and a single by Baker before retiring the final batter. Barton tried to rally in the eighth on solo homers by McInerny and Boykin, but that was it. The Indians finished with 15 hits, including home runs by Baker, Rimer and Daywalt. McInerny, Blackmon, Matt Boykin and Tyler Petty homered for Barton in the slugfest. Baker finished 4-for-4, Rimer was 3-for-3 and Nick Lefko batted 3-for-5. Barton tallied nine hits, including two each by Rufus Wilson, Blackmon and Sean Latimer. Nick Mayle (Landis, NC), now 1-2, was the winner in relief. He was the fourth of five pitchers. Mark Smith (Browns Summitt, NC) retired the final two batters. #####
