Volleyball Downed By Wingate in Three Sets
WINGATE, N.C -- Host Wingate posted a three-game sweep of Catawba in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Thursday night at Cuddy Arena. The Bulldogs won the match 25-18, 25-13, 25-18 and improved to 13-2 overall and 7-1 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 7-8 and 4-4.
Erin Morant (Bealeton, Va./Liberty HS) recorded six kills and hit at 38.5% to pace Catawba. Bri Howard (Graham, N.C./S. Alamance HS) followed with five kills and posted a pair of blocks. Setter Kaytee Frabotta (Sterling Heights, MI/Henry Ford II HS) collected 13 digs with 15 assists.
Shelly Stumpff and Abby Saehler led Wingate with 12 kills each. Both hit over 34%. Stumpff added 15 kills and three blocks, while Saehler posted four blocks and served a pair of aces. Oakley Attaway killed off nine points and setter Iris Brewer handed out 36 assists with five kills.
Wingate jumped out to a 14-7 lead in the opening set as Saehler had two kills and a block late in a 7-2 run. Catawba fought back and came within a point at 18-17 after a pair of blocks from Howard. Following a Bulldog timeout, Wingate ran off six points in a row. Saehler and Katie Bludau each had two kills then got set point on a kill from Stumpff.
Catawba went up 8-5 in set two before Wingate went on a 10-1 run to take control. Saehler served two aces. The Bulldogs built the lead to 20-10 and won the set on a kill from Saehler.
The Lady Indians led for much of the third set, taking a 13-10 lead on a kill from Howard. Rachel Gallup (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland HS) killed a point to pull Catawba even at 18-all in the back-and-forth set, but Wingate ran off six straight points with Saehler collecting a pair of kills and a block. Brewer would kill off the match point.
Catawba gets back into action on Saturday, traveling to Coker for a 2 pm match.
