Softball drops doubleheader to LR to end regular season

SALISBURY, NC – Lenoir-Rhyne swept a doubleheader from host Catawba in South Atlantic Conference softball action at Whitley Field on Tuesday afternoon. The Bears won by the scores of 2-0 and 5-3 and improve to 25-14 overall and 9-3 in the SAC. Catawba falls to 20-22 and 5-9. The opening game stayed scoreless until the seventh inning before Lenoir-Rhyne benefited from a Lady Indian error to plate two unearned runs. Elaine Seter (Hickory, NC) drove home both runs with a one-out single. Catawba had a chance to draw first blood in the sixth after a leadoff double by Ashlee Rhoades (China Grove, NC), but she was stranded there. Bear pitcher Audrey Kreske (Miami, FL) took a no-hitter to the sixth before Rhoades broke up the bid. Kreske would allow just the one hit with a walk and a dozen strikeouts. Catawba’s Megan Wilson (Stuart, VA) pitched well in the loss, scattering five hits with four strikeouts in six and two-thirds innings. A two-out error by Catawba led to a pair of runs in the third inning of the second game to give Lenoir-Rhyne 2-0 lead. The runs scored on a bases-loaded walk to Casey Ledford (Newton, NC) and a single by Chrissy Lunsford (Tyrone, GA). Catawba trimmed the lead to a single run in its third as Stacey Handy (Advance, NC) drove home Toni Vodola (Wall, NJ) with a base hit. Lenoir-Rhyne would strike right back in the top of the fourth, scoring twice on wild pitches. The Bears took a 5-1 lead after Lunsford’s RBI single in the fifth. Catawba would put the tying run on base in the seventh, getting two singles and walk to load the bases with one out. Jessica Davies (Solvay, NY) singled home one run and a second scored on a groundout by Val McDowell (Crofton, MD), but Handy grounded out to end the threat. Lunsford and Karen Reams (Laurens, SC) each had two hits for Lenoir-Rhyne, while Handy had a pair of hits for the Lady Indians. Sarah Cox (Hudson, NC) pitched five strong innings for the Bears, scattering five hits and allowing one unearned run. #####
