SALISBURY, N.C -- Visiting Lenoir-Rhyne fended off an upset bid by Catawba, winning a five-set South Atlantic Conference volleyball match on Tuesday night at Goodman Gym.  The Bears won 21-25, 25-19, 18-25, 25-20, 15-13 to improve to 9-4 overall and 8-1 in the SAC.  The Catawba Indians fall to 8-9 and 5-5.

Brooke Redmond led the charge for the Bears, finishing with 20 kills and 17 digs.  Brandi Thomas added a dozen kills and Emily Steele five blocks.

Catawba had a balanced attack led by Rachel Gallup's (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland HS) 13 kills and six blocks.  Bri Howard (Graham, N.C./S. Alamance HS) and Alex Hopper (Madison, N.C./McMichael HS) each had 11 kills and Erin Morant (Bealeton, Va./Liberty HS) tallied 10 kills.  Morant totaled six blocks and Howard five.

In the deciding set, Lenoir-Rhyne rallied from down 6-2 and  11-8 to tie the match at 12-all after consecutive kills from Redmond.  Gallup killed a point to put Catawba on top 13-12, but Redmond answered.  Jessica Funk followed with an ace for the Bears, who won the match on a setting error by the Lady Indians.

Gallup had a pair of kills and Evan Schultz (Richmond, Va./Monacan HS) an ace as Catawba started the fifth set with a 4-1 lead.  A block by Samantha Bishop and Morgan Bunker got the Bears even at 7-all.  Catawba used a three-point run to lead 11-8 and held a 12-10 lead after a kill by Gallup before LR rallied for the win.

In the opening set, a pair of kills from McKenzie Garrison (Newton, N.C./Maiden HS) helped Catawba break a 17-17 tie and move out to a 22-18 lead.  Down 23-19, LR got within 23-21 before Howard had a kill and block to end the set.

A five-point run by LR in the second set broke a 12-all tie.  Redmond had two kills in the run.  Catawba cut the margin to 19-16, but Bunker and Brandi Thomas each had two kills to get the Bears to set point which ended on an attack error by Catawba.

Catawba rebounded in set three, pulling away late from a 16-16 tie.  A kill from Kaytee Frabotta (Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II HS) and two attack errors gave the Lady Indians a 19-16 lead.  A kill from Morant and an ace from Garrison made it 21-17.  The Lady Indians ran off the final four points with Howard killing off set point.

Lenoir-Rhyne raced to a 7-0 lead in set four, getting three kills from Kayla Bolt.  A combo block by Bolt and Bishop put the Bears up 9-2.  The Lady Indians rallied with 17-13 before Bolt, Thomas and Steele put away kills for a 20-13 edge.  Back to back kills from Gallup closed the gap to 23-20, but a service error was followed by a kill from Redmond to send the match to the final set.

Catawba will host Brevard on Saturday at 2 pm in its next match.
