Football Hits The Road For First Meeting With Limestone
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba will try to keep the pattern of following a loss with a pair of wins as the Catawba Indians travel to Gaffney, S.C., for a first-time meeting with the Limestone Saints. Limestone is in its second season of fielding a football team and are facing a full slate of South Atlantic Conference opponents.
The Indians are coming off a 17-13 win over Newberry on wet and sloppy turf at Shuford Stadium. Catawba used two big plays to rally in the second half from a 13-3 deficit. The first came late in the third quarter when quarterback Mike Sheehan broke off a 60-yard run to set up his 16-yard scoring pass to Keyon West with just under a minute to go in the quarter.
On the next possession, Sheehan completed a short third-down pass to Gary Williams, who turned it into a 44-yard play to the Newberry 11. Two plays later, Cary Littlejohn took it in from two-yards out to put Catawba on top 17-13. The Indians defense shut down Newberry on final three possessions to get the win.
Limestone fell to Wingate 17-12 in a tight battle at Wingate. After taking the early lead on an interception return for a score by Sheldon Reid, Limestone saw the Bulldogs reel off 17 straight points through the middle of the third quarter. The Saints cut the margin to 17-12 on a one-yard run by Jonathan Clark with 3:39 to go in the third, but Limestone could not mount another scoring drive.
Quarterback Bo Whitney ran for 127 yards and completed 6-of-18 passes for 41 yards. The Saints were held to just 190 total yards. Joey Felder made 14 tackles on defense with a fumble recovery. Logan Stoodley had three tackles for losses.
Both teams enter the game pretty even statistically. Each are averaging just over 300 total yards with about 200 coming on the ground. Neither team is converting above 30% on third down, while each team has committed eight turnovers and scored 13 points off its opponent’s turnovers.
Littlejohn has led Catawba offensively, averaging nearly 100 yards per game. He has 491 yards through five games and is averaging 5.4 yards per carry. Sheehan is completing just under 53% of his passes and averaging 114 yards through the air. Williams, Bruce Smith and Carlos Tarrats each have reached double digits in receptions.
Jamal Lackey has posted a team-high 39 tackles and has forced a pair of fumbles. Kyle Kitchens has four sacks and 8.5 stops for losses, while Michael Peppers has added three sacks.
Whitney is Limestone’s top ground gainer at 101.7 yards over his three games. Ga’Quan Maize adds about 65 yards a game. Whitney has thrown for about 45 yards a game with Clark throwing for about 90 a contest. Vyncint Smith is the top receiving target with 15 catches.
Kickoff for the game at Gaffney High School is set for 7 p.m.
