Volleyball Sweeps past Brevard
SALISBURY, N.C -- Catawba got 10 kills each from Bri Howard (Graham, N.C./S. Alamance HS) and Alex Hopper (Madison, N.C./McMichael HS) in a three-set sweep of visiting Brevard in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians posted a 25-19, 25-15, 25-17 victory to improve to 9-9 overall and 6-5 in the SAC. The Tornados lose for the first time in five matches, falling to 6-9 and 5-6.
Catawba hit at a season-high 37.4% in the match and nearly 40% in the final set. Erin Morant (Bealeton, Va./Liberty HS) and McKenzie Garrison (Newton, N.C./Maiden HS) just missed double digits in kills, each collecting nine without a hitting error. Garrison added 10 digs and Morant tallied three blocks.
Brevard got off to a quick start in the opening set, leading 5-1 and 12-8 with each four-point bulge forcing a Lady Indian timeout. After the second timeout, Catawba ran off 10 of the next 13 points with the final three coming on kills from Garrison to push the Lady Indians ahead 18-15. It was 22-19 when Hopper followed her hitting error with two kills for a 24-19 edge. Set point came on an attack error from Brevard.
The teams traded small runs early in the second set with the Tornados cutting the Catawba lead to 14-13 on a kill from Fatima Gharachorloo. From there, Catawba ran off nine straight points behind the serve of Morant, who delivered one ace in the surge. Garrison had a kill, Howard a kill and a block and Hopper two kills. Hopper and Howard killed off the final two points of the set.
A three-point Brevard run to tie the third set at 7-7 forced an early Catawba timeout. The Lady Indians responded with a 10-3 run. Hopper and Howard had kills with Kaytee Frabotta (Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II HS) adding an ace in four quick points for an 11-7 edge. Another four-point run with kills from Frabotta and Rachel Gallup (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland HS) made it 17-10. Two more kills from Frabotta upped the lead to 21-13 and the match ended on a Brevard service error.
Gharachorloo led Brevard, who hit at 16%, with nine kills. Whitney DeMoss and Hannah Elmore, who played just the third set, collected six kills. Rachel Ruble posted five kills and four blocks, while Aleksandra Vrvilo registered 13 digs and served a pair of aces.
Frabotta handed out 40 assists to go along with five kills, 11 digs and a pair of aces for Catawba. Evan Schultz (Richmond, Va./Manocan HS) also served two aces.
