Last Minute Goal Lifts Carson-Newman Over Catawba 4-3
SALISBURY, N.C. -- The Catawba College men's soccer team suffered a 4-3 defeat to Carson-Newman University in South Atlantic Conference action Saturday afternoon at Frock Field. The Indians played the final 24:44 of the match a man down after recieving a Brian Woulfe red card. With the loss, the Indians fall to 4-7 on the year and 2-5 in the conference. Carson-Newman improves to 8-2-1 and 5-2 in the SAC.
After a 1-1 deadlock, Carson-Newman began a fluery of scoring for the two teams with a Marius Staalby header in the 65th minute. The goal came off a corner by Tom Read perfectly placed in the box. A minute later, Catawba's Phillip Hollenhorst tied the game at two with a header of his own off a Woulfe corner kick.
During the celebration of the goal, Woulfe was awarded his second yellow card of the match resulting in a red card and ejection from the game. Three minutes later in the 69th minute, Carson-Newman's Sindre Welo mirrored the previous two goals with a header off a Read cross.
Despite being a man down, Catawba's Bradley Dowdall tallied a goal from forty yards out that found the narrow window between the crossbar and the outstretched hand of Eagles keeper Kavi Luchowa.
In the final minutes of the match, Read earned his third assist of the match after connecting with Welo. Read sent in a free kick to the box in the 86th minute to find the foot of Welo who flicked the ball past Catawba goalie, Christian Watts.
Watts finished the night with a pair of saves while Staalby stopped three of his own. Carson-Newman took 13 shots in the game while Catawba took six.
Catawba returns to action next Saturday when the Indians travel to Anderson University. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
