Football Back Home Saturday to Face Mars Hill

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba looks to build on its back-to-back wins as the Catawba Indians entertain Mars Hill on Saturday afternoon.  The Indians have endured three straight weeks of playing in wet conditions and were able to take two wins in defensive struggles.

Catawba is coming off a 10-3 win at Limestone last weekend.  Mark McDaniel set a school record with three interceptions in the victory.  His first two picks set up Catawba’s 10 points and his final interception ended the last Limestone drive on a fourth down pass at the goal line.

Offensively, Catawba got its points on an 18-yard scoring run from Cary Littlejohn and a 31-yard field goal from Chad Hollandsworth.  Catawba managed just 124 yards of offense with Mike Sheehan being the main weapon, accounting for 92 yards on the ground.

In addition to McDaniel’s three picks, Chris Carpenter also had an interception.  Michael Peppers collected 11 tackles and CJ Barksdale another 10.  Trey Evans was in on three stops for losses.

Mars Hill claimed a 17-14 win at Newberry on Saturday.  Shaikel Davis had a pair of touchdown runs in the first half and Dylan Barnas kicked a 28-yard field goal in the third quarter for the winning points.  Foluke Gordon-Lamar ran for a team-high 82 yards in the win.

Trey Clark made 15 tackles on defense with a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.  Robert Morgan intercepted a last chance pass on the game’s final play.

On the season, Catawba’s offense has been limited due to the weather and is averaging 277 yards per game.  Littlejohn has run for 511 yards in six games and has moved into 11th on the Catawba all-time rushing list with 1,640 career yards.  David Burgess is just 16 yards shy of joining the 1,000-yard club as the 37th member.

Jamal Lackey has recorded 46 tackles to lead the defense.  Kyle Kitchens has racked up four sacks and 10.5 stops for losses while recovering three fumbles.  Peppers follows with three sacks and has been in on 40 tackles.

Davis has led Mars Hill and, like Littlejohn, has run for just over 500 yards (529) in six games.  Matt Layman has completed 60% of his passes with seven touchdowns and is averaging 156 yards a game.  Wide out Keshaun Taylor has eight TD grabs among his 45 catches.

Clark leads the Lion defensive unit with 60 total tackles.  The Lions have recorded just three sacks on the year with one coming from Chris Daniels, who has four stops for losses.  Cameron Ray has two of the team’s four interceptions.

Catawba leads the series with Mars Hill 29-24, but the Lions have won three of the last four match-ups.  Catawba picked up a 38-31 win at Shuford Stadium in 2013 in the last meeting in Salisbury.

Kickoff on Saturday is set for 1:30 pm.
