Volleyball Takes Down Newberry in Three Sets

SALISBURY, N.C -- Erin Morant (Bealeton, Va./Liberty HS) delivered a dozen kills, hitting at 64.7%, with just one error in 17 swings to pace host Catawba to a three-game sweep of Newberry in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at Goodman Gym.  The Catawba Indians claimed a 25-15, 25-16, 28-26 win to improve to 10-9 overall and 7-5 in the SAC.  The Wolves fall to 7-11 and 3-9.

McKenzie Garrison (Newton, N.C./Maiden HS) followed Morant with nine kills, Alex Hopper (Madison, N.C./McMichael HS) added eight and Bri Howard (Graham, N.C./S. Alamance HS) seven.  Howard recorded three blocks and Kaytee Frabotta (Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II HS) handed out 38 assists with a pair of blocks.

Catawba had to battle back in third set to complete the sweep.  Down 18-14, an error followed by kills from Garrison and Morant made it 18-17.  Newberry stayed up until Garrison and Morant would go back-to-back again on kills to put the Lady Indians up 20-19.  The teams traded points over the next six rotations before Garrison ended the match on an ace.

The Lady Indians hit at nearly 36% to take the opening set, while Newberry hit in negative numbers with five kills and seven errors.  Consecutive kills from Garrison paced Catawba to a 14-7 lead.  Newberry posted three straight points, the last on an ace from Alexus Horton, but Catawba ran off nine of the next 11 points to take over.  Morant killed off the final point.

A block and kill from Frabotta pushed Catawba to an early 6-1 lead in set two.  The Lady Indians built its advantage to 19-7 before Newberry whittled the deficit to 21-15.  Howard had a kill, Morant a block and Evan Schultz (Richmond, Va./Manocan HS) an ace to make it 24-15 and Catawba went on to take a two-set lead.

Samantha De Jong led Newberry with 10 kills.  She hit at 69.2% with a single error in 13 attempts.  Kensley Jordan recorded a dozen digs and Horton served a pair of aces with a pair of blocks and five kills.

Catawba hosts Anderson in another SAC match on Saturday at 5 p.m.
