Volleyball Sweeps Anderson to Give Hamric Her 500th Coaching Win
SALISBURY, N.C -- Catawba won its third straight South Atlantic Conference volleyball match with a three-game sweep of visiting Anderson on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The win, by the scores of 25-13, 25-23, 26-24, gave Catawba Indians Head Coach Ginger Hamric her 500th win at Catawba. The Lady Indians improve to 11-9 overall and 8-5 in the SAC. The Trojans fall to 9-10 and 7-6.
Rachel Gallup (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland HS) led Catawba with 11 kills, while Erin Morant (Bealeton, Va./Liberty HS), McKenzie Garrison (Newton, N.C./Maiden HS), Alex Hopper (Madison, N.C./McMichael HS) and Bri Howard (Graham, N.C./S. Alamance HS) each posted seven kills.
For the second straight match, Catawba rallied late in the third set to complete the sweep. The Lady Indians trailed 17-13 after Anderson had ran off seven straight points. Catawba would battle back and eventually tie the set at 22-all on a kill by Hopper. The Trojans got a set point at 24-23 after a kill from Jessica Harris, but Catawba reeled off the final three points. Howard and Gallup recorded kills for a 25-24 lead and the final point came on an attack error from Anderson.
The Trojans had used a six-point run midway through the second set to go up 18-17. Serena Jackson had three kills in the surge. Catawba retook the lead at 21-20 on back-to-back kills from Morant. Harris tied the set at 22-all, but kills from Howard and Gallup gave Catawba a set point. A Jayln Knight kill saved one set point, but Howard followed with a kill for Catawba to take the set.
Catawba rolled to a win in the opening set. The Lady Indians scored 11 straight points early to go up 14-2. Kaytee Frabotta (Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II HS) had two aces, Gallup two kills and a block and Howard a kill and two blocks in the run. Gallup eventually killed off the final point of the set.
Harris led Anderson with 13 kills. Marissa Mitter added 11 kills and seven digs. Megan Embry totaled 15 digs with Emily Conard collecting 14 digs and one ace. Priscilla Irizarry handed out 30 assists.
Garrison and Frabotta each recorded 12 digs for the Lady Indians. Frabotta had 34 assists. Catawba served seven aces, two each from Frabotta and Meredith Furr (Concord, N.C./Cox Mill HS).
Catawba is on the road next weekend for a pair of league matches. The Lady Indians are at Carson-Newman on Friday at 7 pm and at Lincoln Memorial on Saturday at 2 pm.
