Haverty finishes as runner-up at SAC Women's Golf Championships

PROSPERITY, SC –- Tusculum senior Rachel McFarland closed out her career in style, shooting a school, SAC Tournament and course record 69 to take the individual medalist honors at the 2003 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Women’s Golf Tournament which concluded on Thursday afternoon. Lenoir-Rhyne took the team title by 15 shots over second place and defending champion, Wingate. The event was held at the 5,824-yard, par-72 Mid Carolina Golf Course. Lenoir-Rhyne led by 10 shots over Wingate entering the final round and would shoot a team score of 316 to push the margin to 15. The Bears had a three-round total of 972 to Wingate’s 987. Tusculum, buoyed by a final round 315, finished third at 1000, while Catawba was fourth at 1012. McFarland shot a two-under 34 on the final nine holes and won the tournament by three shots over Wingate’s Daniela Kessler and Catawba’s Paige Haverty, who shared the first round lead with Newberry’s Aubrey Mosley. Mosley finished fourth and Carlie Gordon, of Lenoir-Rhyne was fifth. The top five earned all-tournament honors, while McFarland was named the tournament MVP. McFarland totaled five birdies on the day, including one on the par-4 finishing hole. She bettered the old school record of 73 and set the Mid Carolina course record for women. The 315 by the Pioneers was also a school mark. Another highlight for Tusculum was a hole-in-one by Brooke Robbins on the par-3, 152-yard, 17th hole. Catawba was led by Paige Haverty, the SAC Freshman and Player of the Year. She was the only golfer in the field to record all three rounds under 80. She will compete next weekend at the NCAA Regional in Lakeland, FL. Junior Kristen Kyle also turned in a nice final round with a 76 after starting the day five over after three holes.
