Ragan's Overtime Goal Lifts Catawba to 2-1 Victory
SALISBURY, NC -- The Catawba College men's soccer team claimed a 2-1 victory in overtime over Tusculum College in South Atlantic Conferece play Saturday evening at Frock Field. Catawba improves to 5-9 overall and 3-7 in the conference. Tusculum falls to 8-5-1 on the season and 5-3-1 in the SAC.
The game winner came in the 100th minute for the Indians when senior Kenny Bonilla crossed the ball into Jack Ragan. The Australian midfielder booted a sharp angled line drive into the far side of the net for the win.
Catawba's first goal of the match came in the 60th minute of play when Catawba earned a corner. Jack Ragan drove the corner long to find the head of Phillip Hollenhorst who battled for the header. Hollenhorst directed the ball to the front of the box where Belony Joseph one-timed a shot past the Pioneer keeper, Jorge Alvarez. Joseph's goal marked his second of the season.
Tusculum evened the match in the 83rd minute after being awarded a penalty kick when Catawba was called for a hand ball in the box. Tusculum relied on Tyler Linkous who drove the ball to the lower right corner of the net. Catawba keeper, Christian Watts, was beat after diving to the opposite side of the goal.
The teams were even in shots with 13 a piece. The Pioneers led in corner kicks 8-4. Fouls played a large part of the night with 31 total calls. Catawba committed 18 fouls and Tusculum recorded 14.
Watts finished the night with five saves while Alvarez stopped four shots.
Catawba will return to action on Wednesday for non-conference action against #1 ranked Pfeiffer. The home match for Catawba will be senior day for their four veterans.
