Women's Tennis falls to Carson-Newman

CLINTON, SC -- The #5 seed Carson-Newman Lady Eagles won two out of three doubles flights en route to their 5-1 win over #4 seed Catawba in quarterfinal action of the 2003 South Atlantic Conference Women's Tennis Tournament held at Callaway Courts on the campus of Presbyterian College. The Lady Eagles (9-9) advance to tomorrow's semifinal match with top seed Tusculum College, who received a bye to the semifinals. The match is scheduled to start at 9:00 am. Catawba ends the season at 7-13 overall. Carson-Newman, who lost to Catawba 5-4 during the regular season, picked up key wins at #1 doubles (8-6) and #3 doubles (8-4) to take a 2-1 advantage entering singles play. In singles, the Eagles' freshman Erika Bellettini (Maracay, VENEZUELA) topped Catawba's junior Amy Behrman (Daleville, IN) 6-4, 6-2 at #1 singles to give Carson-Newman a commanding 4-1 lead. The Lady Eagles clinched the win as sophomore Natalie Tatum (Knoxville, TN) defeated senior Taryn Gordon (Mutare, ZIMBABWE) 6-3, 6-2 at #3 singles.
