Auwarter Scores Two in 2-1 Upset Over Limestone
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Senior Emily Auwarter tallied two goals to led the Catawba College women’s soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Limestone in non-conference action Tuesday night at Frock Field. The win ended a ten game losing streak for the Lady Indians and came on senior night for their 11 veterans. Catawba improves to 4-12 on the season while the #8 team in the Southeast region falls to 13-2.
Limestone drew first blood with an early goal in the 35th second of play. The Saints drove the ball down the left side of the field before Holly Rawcliffe beat Catawba keeper Angelica Pawlowski across the net to the right.
The Lady Indians didn’t give up when Auwarter recorded her first goal in the 15th minute. Senior Sophie Waller started the equalizer off a corner when she lined a ground ball to Bethany Davis. The traditional goalie, Davis, returned the ball to Waller who lofted the ball into the box for the towering Auwarter.
Six minutes later the teams both lost control of the ball in the midfield as it rolled towards the Catawba defense. Auwarter charged the loose ball and booted it toward the Limestone’s goalie, Mariette Martinez. The diving Martinez was unable to stop the goal which landed in the upper, left ninety of the net.
Limestone finished the night leading in shots with a 12-11 advantage, but Catawba forced eight corners to the Saint’s four. Each team committed five fouls.
Pawlowski ended the night recording seven saves with Martinez blocking four shots.
Catawba will end the regular season on Saturday when the Lady Indians travel to Lincoln Memorial for South Atlantic Conference action. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
