Volleyball Falls in Five Sets at Queens

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Queens outlasted visiting Catawba to claim a five-set win in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Tuesday night at the Levine Center.  The Royals won by the scores of 25-16, 21-25, 25-12, 19-25, 15-8 to improve to 9-13 overall and 7-9 in the SAC.  The Catawba Indians fall to 11-12 and 8-8.

It was a quick start to the fifth set that proved to be the difference for Queens.  A kill from Kelsey McCormick had the Royals up 7-2 and after an ace from Annika Jones it was 11-4.  An ace from Meredith Jones put Queens up 14-5.  Catawba saved three match points, but Katie Schoenrock finally killed off the final point for the win.

McKenzie Garrison (Newton, N.C./Maiden HS) and Alex Hopper (Madison, N.C./McMichael HS) each provided 10 kills for Catawba.  Erin Morant (Bealeton, Va./Liberty HS) and Bri Howard (Graham, N.C./S. Alamance HS) each had four bocks in the loss.  It was a tough hitting night for the Lady Indians with 43 kills and 27 errors for a hitting percentage of 10.1%.

Jones tallied 18 kills with five blocks and 11 digs for Queens.  Schoenrock picked up 14 kills with 18 digs, while Taylor Henry recorded nine blocks.  Megan Mancini served five of Queens' 12 aces with Jones adding three more.

Queens broke away late to win a tight first set.  The Royals were down 13-12, but took the lead on an ace from Mancini and went on to lead 19-13 after another ace.  Queens kept at least a five-point lead the rest of the way with Jones and Henry combining for a block to end the set.

Two aces from Rachel Stanford (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee HS) and two blocks from Howard helped Catawba to an early 8-2 lead in set two.  Queens cut the deficit to 12-9 before the Lady Indians ran off nine of the next 14 points to lead 21-14.  Howard killed off the final point of the set.

Queens led set three 11-8 then went on a 8-1 run to balloon its advantage to 19-9 on a kill from Jones.  Schoenrock had back-to-back kills to end the set.

Catawba turned around a 10-9 deficit in set four with a five-point run that included a kill from Stanford and an ace from Morant.  A block from Morant had the Lady Indians up 22-15.  A kill from Rachel Gallup (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland HS) set the match to the final set.

Stanford had seven kills with 11 digs, 23 assists and a pair of aces for the Lady Indians.  Morant also served two aces.

Catawba will try and snap a three-game slide on Friday as it travels to Tusculum for a 7 pm match.
