Football Returns to League Action Saturday at Brevard

SALISBURY, N.C. -- After a non-conference win over UNC Pembroke last week, the Catawba football team jumps back into league action as it travels to Brevard on Saturday.  The Catawba Indians will take a four-game winning streak since 2010.  Catawba last won five straight in 2007.

Catawba sits atop the South Atlantic Conference standings as the only league team with just one loss.  Five teams in the SAC have two losses, including Tusculum and Lenoir-Rhyne which are the final two teams on the schedule for the Indians.  Catawba is currently ranked fourth in the NCAA II Super Region Two Poll.

Last week, Catawba’s offense rolled up a season-high 39 points in a 39-21 win over UNC Pembroke.  The Indians ran for 318 yards with both David Burgess and Mike Sheehan going over 100 yards.  Burgess ran for a career-best 149 yards with a score, while Sheehan totaled 101 yards and scored twice.  Sheehan was also efficient in the air, completing 14-of-19 passes for 133 yards and a TD.

The Indians trailed 7-0 early and were looking at a bigger deficit after UNCP forced a fumble near midfield.  One play later, Chris Carpenter forced a Brave fumble to get the ball back and the offense went on to put up 29 unanswered points to take control.  Carpenter would add an interception and seven tackles to his big day.  Kyle Kitchens recorded three of the team’s five sacks.

Brevard comes into the game searching for its first win of the season.  The Tornados nearly picked up a win two weeks ago, but fell in double overtime to Limestone.  Last week, Brevard lost 41-7 to Newberry.

The Tornados got on the scoreboard first on a two-yard run by Tyler Gregory midway through the first quarter.  Newberry would take over after three second-quarter touchdowns to lead 21-7 at the break.

Brevard was held to just eight first downs in the loss and totaled 200 yards on offense.  C.T. Frederick picked up 43 yards on the ground with Bubba Craving adding 42.  Craven completed 3-of-8 passes for 13 yards.  Gregory went 2-of-4 in the air and ran for 28 yards.

Amir Williams led the defense with seven tackles.  Modzelle Atkins forced a fumble and had a sack and an additional stop for a loss.  Ty’Reik Faulks also caused a fumble.

Saturday’s game at Brevard Memorial Stadium is set for a 1 pm kickoff.
