Softball ends season with extra-inning loss to Tusculum

CLINTON, SC -- Catawba College dropped a pair of games at the 2003 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Softball Tournament on Thursday afternoon at the Presbyterian College Softball Complex. Catawba had its season ended with a 6-0 loss to Lenoir-Rhyne and a 2-1 loss to Tusculum in eight innings. The Lady Indians finish the year 20-24. In the opener against Lenoir-Rhyne, Audrey Kreske pitched a three-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts to lead the third-seeded Bears. Misty Bingham went 3-for-3 for the Bears including a RBI single in L-Rís five-run third inning. Kristin Kimball and Brady Horne also had multi-hit performances for the Bears. Catawba was led offensively by catcher Amanda Myers who went 2-for-3 including a double. Tusculum's Carah Beals doubled in a run in the eighth inning in a loserís bracket game to end the Tribe season. TC got on the board first in the third inning when Jessica Taylor (Greeneville, TN) led off with her sixth home run of the season, a solo blast down the left field line. Catawba knotted the score in the fourth inning when Stacey Handy (Advance, NC) connected on a one-out double to left center, stole third and scored on Jessica Rivera's (Key West, FL) single. From that point, both teams settled in for an old-fashioned pitchers' duel. Following Taylor's homer, Catawba starter Shannon Handy (Advance, NC) retired 15 of the next 16 batters. TC starter Laura Williams (LaVergne, TN) also pitched well tossing the first five innings before giving up the mound to rookie Sue Bobbitt (Weyburn, Saskatchewan, CANADA). Both squads mounted a serious threat in the seventh inning. Catawba's first two batters reached base via a single and a walk and loaded the bases with one out, but Bobbitt struck out Ashlee Rhoades (China Grove, NC) and got Val McDowell (Crofton, MD) to line out to end the inning. TC also loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the frame, but Shannon Handy struck out Kelly Nugent (Pembroke Pines, FL) to end the threat and send the contest into extra innings. Megan Lundwall (Las Vegas, NV) led off the eighth for TC with a single up the middle and moved to second on Laura Menchaca's (Clarksville, TN) one-out base hit. Shannon Handy struck out St. Clair for the second out but Beals (Knoxville, TN) connected on the game-winning hit with her seventh double of the year to score Lundwall from second. Bobbitt pitched three shutout innings while scattering two hits, walked four and struck out three to improve her record to 12. #####
