Volleyball Claims Three-Set Sweep Over Mars Hill
MARS HILL, N.C. -- Catawba claimed a three-set sweep of host Mars Hill in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Stanford Arena. The Catawba Indians improve to 13-12 overall and 10-8 in the SAC, winning by the scores of 26-24, 25-13, 26-24. The Lions fall to 6-18 and 4-13.
Alex Hopper (Madison, N.C./McMichael HS) delivered a dozen digs and hit at 39% in the win. Erin Morant (Bealeton, Va./Liberty HS) picked up nine kills with three blocks. Bri Howard (Graham, N.C./S. Alamance HS) recorded six blocks with Rachel Stanford (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee HS) handing out 32 assists and posting 11 digs and two blocks.
Mars Hill got 10 kills each from Rebecca Butler and Lauren Hochstetler, while Mary Kate Griffin chipped in with nine kills. Andie Russell served three aces and had 32 assists.
The Lions went up 12-9 in the opening set following consecutive kills from Hochstetler. Catawba came right back as Hopper followed a kill from Morant with two of her own to put the Lady Indians on top. A block and kill from Morant extended the run to six points to put Catawba ahead 15-12.
Mars Hill retook the lead at 17-16 and the teams went back-and-forth to the end of the set. A Hochstetler block denied Catawba its first set point, but Howard answered with back-to-back kill to end the set.
The Lady Indians jumped out 5-0 in set two and never trailed. Mars Hill was able to reduce a 7-1 deficit to 10-8, but could get no closer. Catawba scored 10 of the final 11 points of the set with Morant killing off the final point.
A 12-4 scoring run early in set three gave Catawba a 14-9 edge. Mars Hill battled back and drew even at 20-all after back-to-back aces from Russell ended a five-point run. Catawba went up 22-20 following two errors then Elizabeth Kaeser denied a match point to pull the Lions even at 24-all. A kill from Rachel Gallup (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland HS) gave the Lady Indians a second match point and an attack error by Mars Hill ended the match.
Catawba hit at 25% for the match and held Mars Hill to just 13%, recording nine bocks. Libero Evan Schultz (Richmond, Va./Monacan HS) collected 15 digs and served an ace.
Catawba returns home to Goodman Gym on Thursday as the Lady Indians host Wingate at 7 pm.
