SALISBURY, N.C. -- Wingate got 17 kills from Shelly Stumpff and claimed a four-set win over host Catawba in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Thursday night at Goodman Gym. The Bulldogs won by the scores of 25-21, 25-13, 21-25, 25-19 in upping their record to 24-2 overall and 18-1 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 13-13 and 10-9.

Wingate was able to pull away midway through the opening set. With the set tied at 14-all, a block from Brewer started a 7-1 run for the Bulldogs. Brewer also had an ace and a kill in the run. Another kill from Brewer put Wingate on top 24-17 before Catawba closed to 24-21 with the help of kills from Gallup and Garrison. An attack error would give Wingate the set.
The Bulldogs led set two 11-9 before surging to a 23-12 lead. Holmquist picked up a block and four kills in the run. Stumpff added three kills and two aces. A kill from Phoebe Havenaar put Wingate up two sets to one.
Catawba fought back in the fourth set. The Lady Indians jumped out to a 10-4 lead as Garrison had two kills and a block. Wingate cut the deficit to 16-13, but a kill from Gallup and a combo block by Garrison and Morant helped push the lead to 19-13. The Lady Indians took a 24-17 lead then had to hold off a late Wingate rally to finally win the set on a Gallup kill.
It was another mid-set surge in the fourth that pushed Wingate to the win. Leading 12-9, the Bulldogs scored six of the next seven points to lead 18-10. Two aces from Meredith Furr (Concord, N.C./Cox Mill HS) and a kill and block from Morant helped pull Catawba within 19-15. After four Wingate points, Catawba answered back with four straight and it was 23-19. Holmquist followed with two kills to end the match.
The third set marked the first time since 2011, a span of nine matches, that Catawba took a set off the Bulldogs. The Lady Indians have not beaten Wingate since the 2008 NCAA II Southeast Regional. Catawba closes out its home schedule on Saturday, hosting Coker at 2 pm.
