Volleyball Notches Win Over Coker to Lock Up Spot in SAC Tourney
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba grabbed a three-set sweep over visiting Coker in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians up their record to 14-13 overall and 11-9 in the SAC with the 25-19, 25-17, 25-12 win. The Cobras fall to 4-22 and 1-19.
McKenzie Garrison (Newton, N.C./Maiden HS) led a trio of Catawba Indians with double figures in kills, collecting 13 to go along with 14 digs. Alex Hopper (Madison, N.C./McMichael HS) followed with 11 kills, while Erin Morant (Bealeton, Va./Liberty HS) tallied 10 kills and three blocks. Bri Howard (Graham, N.C./S. Alamance HS) nearly reached double digits, picking up nine kills with four blocks.
Catawba overcame a four-point deficit to take set one. Coker pulled out to a 13-9 lead after back-to-back kills from Madison Bingle and another from Shealynn Miller. Catawba responded and tied the set at 17-all on two kills from Hopper around one from Morant. It was Hopper that spurred the win, collecting three straight kills to break a 19-all tie as Catawba won the final six points of the set.
The Lady Indians jumped out to a 8-3 lead in set two. Rachel Gallup (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland HS) had two early kills and Morant added two late along with a block in the early push. Coker never closed within four points the rest of the set. Garrison's kill made it 18-12 and one from Hopper had Catawba up 24-16.
It was all Catawba in the third. A kill from Garrison had the Lady Indians up 7-2 and when Morant killed off three straight points it was 14-6. Allison Benton (High Springs, Fla./St. Francis HS) served two late aces and Garrison killed off the final point of the match.
Benton served three aces for Catawba. Rachel Stanford (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee HS) delivered 36 assists with 10 digs as the Lady Indians hit at 32% in the win. Gallup, who notched seven kills, joined Morant and setter Kaytee Frabotta (Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II HS) as Catawba seniors taking the floor at Goodman Gym for the final time.
Bingle led Coker with 10 kills. Miller followed with seven kills, while setter Christen Bragg had 23 assists, 12 digs, three blocks and two aces.
Catawba next travels to Lenoir-Rhyne on Tuesday for a 7 pm match.
