Howard Posts 16 Kills, but Volleyball Falls in Four at LR
HICKORY, N.C. -- Lenoir-Rhyne took a four-set win over visiting Catawba in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Tuesday night at Shuford Gym. The Bears improve to 19-7 overall and 17-4 in the SAC with a 25-18, 21-25, 25-18, 25-21 win. The Catawba Indians fall to 14-14 and 11-10.
Bri Howard (Graham, N.C./S. Alamance HS) paced Catawba with 16 kills and hitting at 48%. Erin Morant (Bealeton, Va./Liberty HS) followed with 11 kills and three blocks. Evan Schultz (Richmond, Va./Monacan HS) posted 17 digs and served two aces.
The teams swapped runs in the opening set before Lenoir-Rhyne surged late. A four-point Catawba run that was capped by two aces from Schultz gave the Lady Indians a 14-11 edge. The Bears fired back with six straight points to lead 17-14. Emily Steele capped that run with two aces. LR followed by winning seven of the next 10 points to hold a 24-17 edge and won the set on a kill from Steele.
The Lady Indians raced to a 5-0 lead to start set two and led 10-7 before Lenoir-Rhyne ran off nine straight points. Two of the points came on kills from Morgan Bunker. Catawba rallied back, winning seven of the next eight points to pull even. Howard capped the run with back-to-back kills. A Howard kill put Catawba up 21-20 and Morant ended the set with a block and kill.
Consecutive kills from Brooke Redmond had Lenoir-Rhyne out to a 6-2 lead in set three. The Bears never gave up a big run in the set and kills from Ashley Wells had LR up 17-12 and 19-13. Wells had a block and kill in a 4-1 run that gave the Bears a 22-16 edge. Brandi Thomas had the kill on set point.
The Bears jumped to a 10-7 lead in the fourth set after an ace from Jillian Born. Catawba closed to within 10-9 on a kill from Garrison, but Steele had a block and two kills as LR pulled out to a 14-9 lead. Catawba battled back within 20-19 after back-to-back kills from Morant, but a kill from Wells and an ace from Born started a 4-0 run that put the Bears up 24-19. Bunker ended the match on a kill.
Redmond tallied 14 kills for Lenoir-Rhyne, while Thomas added 11 and Bunker 10. Bunker added 18 digs. Steele had nine kills, three blocks and two aces.
Catawba finishes up the regular season on Saturday, traveling to Brevard for a 1 pm match.
