Howard Collects 17 Kills as Volleyball Sweeps Brevard
BREVARD, N.C. -- Catawba closed out the regular season with a sweep of host Brevard in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Boshamer Gym. The Catawba Indians won the match by the scores of 25-22, 25-21, 25-19 to improve to 15-14 overall and 12-10 in the SAC. The Tornados fall to 12-16 and 9-13.
Bri Howard (Graham, N.C./S. Alamance) put down 17 kills on 30 swings and hit at 43% to pace Catawba. The junior also added three blocks. Alex Hopper (Madison, N.C./McMichael) added 10 kills, while Erin Morant (Bealeton, Va./Liberty) totaled seven blocks. Setter Rachel Stanford (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) handed out 33 assists with eight digs and six blocks.
Hannah Elmore led Brevard with 10 kills, two blocks and two aces. Fatima Gharachorloo collected nine kills, while Kindle Kirkham had eight. Aleksandra Vrvilo recorded 18 digs.
Catawba pulled away late to grab the first set. With the set tied at 17, the Lady Indians ran off six straight points. Morant and Stanford combined for three blocks in the run. Elmore had two kills to help Brevard close within 23-21, but Catawba scored two of the final three points on Tornado errors.
The second set was tight as well as the team matched points to keep the score tied from 15-15 until it was 21-21. Howard took over putting down three kills as Catawba scored the final four points of the set.
A Hopper kill late in set three put Catawba up 19-17 and Howard followed with a combo block with Stanford. Howard answered a kill from Gharachorloo with one of her own before two Brevard hitting errors gave the Lady Indians a 23-18 edge. Brevard scored one more point before a service error and a kill from Howard ended the match.
Catawba finished in a tie for fourth place in the conference standings and will face Lincoln Memorial in the first round of the SAC Tournament on Friday at 2:30 at Anderson University. Brevard will face top-seeded Wingate in the first round.
