Women's Basketball Holds Off Barton
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Catawba women's basketball team held off a Barton comeback to post an 86-78 win on Saturday afternoon at a SAC/CC Challenge at Queens' Levine Center. The Catawba Indians improve to 2-0, while the Bulldogs fall to 0-2.
Bri Johnson (Statesville, N.C./N. Iredell/Belmont Abbey) had another solid night for Catawba with 24 points on 8-of-12 shooting. She added seven rebounds. Terri Rogers (Burlington, N.C./E. Alamance), who went 8-for-8 from the field, and Zhaquondalee Greer (Greensboro, N.C./Academy at Smith/Charleston So.) each tossed in 16 points.
Barton put five players in double figures led by Tatyana Jackson's 18. JerBria Smith added 15, while Caila Carter scored 14 points and grabbed a dozen rebounds. Alex Kimble chipped in with 13 points and Kianna Wynn added 10.
Rogers led a quick Catawba start with six points as the Lady Indians grabbed a 10-3 lead. The lead ballooned to 18-6 on a pair of free throws by Khadijah Brown (Warrenton, N.C./Warren Co./Allen) at the 1:52 mark of the first quarter. Catawba would lead 20-11 after the first 10 minutes.
The Lady Indians kept a big lead much of the second quarter. Catawba's largest lead in the half came with a minute to go after consecutive baskets by Johnson had the Lady Indians up 44-26. Catawba shot 50% in the opening half, while Barton canned just 24%. The Lady Indians also held a 29-16 edge on the glass at the half.
Catawba pushed its lead to 19 midway through the third quarter and held a double-digit lead with six minutes to go. Barton rallied and used a 13-5 run to get within 75-72 win 2:48 to play after a three-pointer by Smith.
After a Catawba free throw, Smith closed the gap to 76-74 with 2:36 left. Greer canned a big three to give the Lady Indians a 79-74 edge and Catawba connected on 5-of-6 at the line in the final 38 seconds to take the win.
Catawba improved its shooting in the second half, making 15-of-25 shots (60%). Barton canned 58% in the second half. Catawba held a 43-33 edge on the board and the hot shooting help overcome 23 turnovers.
Catawba hosts Johnson C. Smith in its home opener on Tuesday at 7 pm.
