Indians Push Tusculum to the Wire in 54-51 Loss
SALISBURY, N.C. -- The Tusculum College women’s basketball team survived a tough Catawba College attack with a 54-51 victory in South Atlantic Conference action Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gymnasium. With the win Tusculum advances to 4-1 on the season and 2-0 in conference play. Catawba drops to 3-5 overall and 0-2 in the SAC.
Tusculum concluded the first quarter of play with a 16-11 lead over the Catawba Lady Indians. The Pioneers maintained the lead holding on to a 27-25 lead at halftime. In the third quarter Catawba controlled the pace of play despite an early 6-2 run to open the quarter. The trio of Terri Rogers, Bri Johnson and Serena Brown combined to give the Catawba a 42-41 lead going into the final quarter.
In the fourth, Tusculum used an 8-2 run to open play to claim a 49-44 lead. Catawba regrouped and traded baskets with the Pioneers leading to a last second opportunity for Catawba. With 11 seconds remaining senior Emma Ucinski converted a pair of free throws to bring the game to 52-51. After multiple fouls, Tusculum’s Shynese Whitener made both of her free throws to extend the lead to 54-51 with seven seconds remaining. Catawba was unable to get a clean shot off during the final seconds.
Catawba finished the day shooting 19-of-52 (36.5%) from the field and 8-for-23 from long range. The Lady Indians were able to convert 5-for-6 from the free throw line. As a team Catawba grabbed 30 rebounds. Johnson’s three point shooting helped as she tallied 23 points in the losing effort and added a pair of rebounds. Guards Marshauna Butler and Brown led Catawba with six rebounds each.
Tusculum was led by Whitener’s 22 points followed by 14 points from Sydney Wilson. Kristen McMillon controlled the boards with ten rebounds on the day. The Pioneers shot 21-for-50 (42.0%) overall and was just 1-for9 from behind the arc. Tusculum fared much better from the free throw line going 11-for-15. The team also recorded 34 rebounds in the win.
Catawba will return to action on Saturday, December 12, as they travel to Mars Hill for another South Atlantic Conference matchup. Tipoff will be at 2:00 p.m.
