Catawba Dominate Carson-Newman in 79-66 Victory
SALISBURY, NC -- The trio of Terri Rogers, Bri Johnson and Alexis Newbold led the Catawba College women’s basketball team to cruise past the Carson-Newman Eagles 79-66 in South Atlantic Conference action Wednesday night at Goodman Gym. Rogers 23 points and 14 rebounds paced all players on the night to lift Catawba to 4-6 on the season and 1-3 in the conference. With the loss, the Eagles fall to 7-3 overall and 1-3 in the SAC.
Four Catawba players opened the game for an immediate 7-0 lead. The Lady Indians high paced offense extended the lead to as much as 17 before closing out the first quarter 25-9. The second quarter was not much different for Catawba as the lead extended to its largest lead of the night at 26 points.
Johnson aided Roger with 18 points and four assists while Newbold contributed a career high 16 points and seven rebounds. On the other side of the ball, Carson-Newman was led by Briana Smith who recorded 17 points in the losing efforts.
Catawba shot 26-of-59 (44.1%) from the field and 5-for-11 from three-point range. The Lady Indians added 22-of-28 (78.6%) from the free throw line while grabbing 44 rebounds.
Carson-Newman only shot 24-of-71 (33.8%) on the night, including a mere 4-for-24 from long range. The Eagles converted 14-of-19 from the charity stripe for 73.7%. The Lady Eagles added 40 rebounds on the night.
Catawba returns to action on Saturday as they host Anderson in South Atlantic Conference action at Goodman Gym. Tipoff is slated for 2:00 p.m.
