Men's Basketball Edged Out By Wingate
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Wingate eked out a 59-58 win over host Catawba in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action on Wednesday night at Goodman Gym. The Bulldogs lost nearly all of a 14-point second-half lead, but held on to improve to 11-4 overall and 7-2 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 7-8 and 5-4.
The Bulldogs built their bulge five minutes into the second half after a free throw from Josh Dominquez put Wingate up 38-24. Catawba clawed back and pulled within a basket at 50-48 following a layup from Jameel Taylor (Anderson, S.C./Hanna) at the 4:05 mark.
Catawba twice had a chance to tie after Wingate missed free throws, but the Indians had a turnover and a missed shot before a three-pointer from Dominquez pushed the Bulldog lead to 53-48 with 2:39 left. The Indians fired back on a layup from Jeremy McLaughlin (Greenville, S.C./Mauldin) and a three-pointer from Jerrin Morrison (Charlotte, N.C./E. Mecklenburg) to make it 54-53 with 42 ticks remaining.
Wingate’s Xavier Griffin converted a layup for Wingate with 15 seconds left and Catawba had a tough turnover when they had a dribble go off the foot of a player after the inbounds. The Bulldogs picked up two free throws by Isiah Cureton with 10 seconds to go.
Rakeen Brown (Hampton, Va./Bethel/Delaware St.) followed with a layup then a three-pointer after a made Wingate free throw to cut the score to 59-58 with just .9 seconds remaining. Catawba called an extra time out which resulted in a technical foul, but Wingate missed its free throw. The Bulldogs were able to get a successful inbounds pass and ran out the clock to hold on for the win.
Mike Baez led Wingate with 13 points in a grinding defensive battle. Cureton followed with 11 points and Keith Griffin blocked five shots. Catawba got 12 points from Brown, 11 from Morrison and 10 from Taylor.
Catawba scored the first four points, but Wingate followed with a 14-2 run to take a lead it never gave back. Catawba shot just 37% in the loss and failed to capitalize on a poor night at the line by Wingate as the Bulldogs went just 8-of-19 (42%) at the stripe.
Catawba returns home on Saturday as the Indians host 16th-ranked Lincoln Memorial at 4 pm.
