A Strong Team Attack Lifts Catawba Over Wingate 73-69
SALISBURY, N.C. -- A balance Catawba attack lifted the Lady Indians women’s basketball team over South Atlantic Conference rival Wingate, 73-69, Wednesday evening at Goodman Gym. Bri Johnson and Jada Huntley led Catawba’s charge to bring the team to 7-8 on the season and 4-5 in the conference. Wingate falls to 9-4 overall and 6-3 in the SAC.
Entering into the fourth quarter, Catawba held onto a four point advantage. A Terri Rogers layup extended the lead to six for the Lady Indians. The teams traded baskets until Wingate’s Shelby Tricoli managed to tie the game with 1:25 left on the clock. The next possession Huntley drained the tree to give Catawba a lead that they would not surrender.
Huntley followed the three with a made free throw to extend the lead to four with 15 seconds left. Despite Wingate converting on a free throw, Rogers nailed one of two attempts of her own to seal the game.
Johnson, who managed 18 points and five rebounds for the game, laid the foundation for Catawba in the first half scoring 15 of those points in the first twenty minutes. Huntley added 16 points and five rebounds to the cause while Rogers dropped in ten of her own. Emma Ucinski and Zhaquondalee Greer both tallied nine points in the win.
Catawba finished the night shooting 26-for-60 (43.3%) from the field and 9-for-21 from long range. With a lower than usual performance, the Lady Indians only converted 12-of-20 attempts from the free throw line.
The Wingate Bulldogs shot 26-of-53 (49.1%) on the night and 8-for-17 from three. From the charity stripe, Wingate went 9-for-16 in the loss. Amber Neely tallied the most points for the Bulldogs with 14 points. Tricoli added 12 points while Alex Tomlinson contributed ten.
Wingate outrebounded Catawba 38-30.
Catawba will remain home on Saturday as they host Lincoln Memorial in South Atlantic Conference action at 2:00 p.m.
