Baseball Opens Season Friday in Florida vs. Barry
The Catawba baseball team has headed south and is set to open the 2016 season on Friday against Barry University in Miami Shores, Fla. The Catawba Indians will play three games in the Miami area over the weekend, following Friday night’s game with afternoon tilts with Lynn on Saturday and Nova Southeastern on Sunday.
After its run to a national runner-up finish in 2015, Catawba has been tabbed as the early favorite to repeat as South Atlantic Conference Champions. The Indians also start the year ranked #1 in the Southeast Region by the NCBWA and are #2 in both the Collegiate Baseball and NCBWA national polls.
Catawba has never faced Barry, while the Indians have a 1-2 mark against Lynn and dropped its only other contest with Nova Southeastern. The three losses to the teams came in an opening trip to Florida in 2014. Catawba’s win over Lynn came in Tampa at the 2006 South Regional.
The Indians will not play its home opener until February 20th when they host Shippensburg for a Saturday doubleheader. The bulk of Catawba’s home slate comes in March when the Indians play 11 of its 18 games that month at Newman Park. The Indians will not have a weekend home series in April, playing three conference road series and another in Tampa.
