Baseball Tripped Up By Barry in Season Opener
MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry rapped out 17 hits en route to a 12-7 season-opening baseball win over visiting Catawba on Friday night at Feinbloom Field. The Buccaneers scored runs in each of the first six innings in topping the Catawba Indians, ranked #2 in the preseason ABCA poll.
Catawba picked up three walks in the first inning, but could not push a run across. In the bottom of the first, Barry's Carlos Matamoros led off with a triple and scored on a hit by Khalil Denson. The Buccaneers tacked on a pair of runs in the second on a two-out, two-run single from Alexander DeGoti.
The Indians jumped on the scoreboard in the top of third on a two-run homer by Will Albertson (Sophia, N.C./Randleman HS/Campbell). Barry answered those runs with four in the bottom half. The big blow was Denson's two-out, three-run double.
Catawba picked up a run in the fourth then rallied to within 9-6 in the fifth. Kyle Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) and Emmitt Carden (Whispering Pines, N.C./Union Pines) collected RBI in the frame. Barry came right back to score twice and added another run in the sixth. Jake Kimble's RBI double in the ninth capped the scoring.
Smith led the Indians at the plate with four hits and a walk in six trips to the plate. Albertson had three hits and also walked. Austin Stilley (Thomasville, N.C./Ledford) had a hit in his only official at bat while drawing four walks. He scored a pair of runs.
Denson had four hits and drove in four runs for the Buccaneers. Matamoros and Ramon Valdez each picked up three hits. Nate Greve earned the win in relief as he tossed a pair of innings and allowed just one run off two hits. Sean Grant (Statesville, N.C./W. Iredell) took the loss for Catawba.
The Indians return to the diamond on Saturday, taking on 20th-ranked Lynn at 1 pm.
