Weiker's Six Shutout Frames Sparks Baseball to First Win

DAVIE, Fla. -- Russ Weiker (Albemarle, N.C./S. Stanly/Liberty) threw six shutout innings and second-ranked Catawba claimed a 5-2 win over host #17 Nova Southeastern in baseball action on Sunday afternoon at the NSU Baseball Complex.  The Catawba Indians improve to 1-2, while the Sharks drop to 0-3.

Catawba took the lead in the third as Jake Kimble (Concord, N.C./Mt. Pleasant/Liberty) tripled home Austin Stilley (Thomasville, N.C./Ledford), who had led off with a walk and was sacrificed to second.  Kyle Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) followed Kimble's triple with a single to center and the Indians were up 2-0.

Will Albertson (Sophia, N.C./Randleman/Campbell) singled with two outs in the fifth and came around to score on Zach Almond's (Richfield, N.C./N. Stanly/UNCG) single to stretch the lead to 3-0.  In the seventh, Albertson connected on his second homer of the year to make it 4-0.

Weiker's day was done after six innings as he worked around four hits and a pair of walks to keep Nova off the scoreboard.  The Sharks had runners on in each inning, but could not bring a run home.  The biggest threat was the fifth when Nova started the inning with a hit batter and a walk.  Weiker got three fly outs to end the inning without any damage.

Nova scored its first run in the eighth on a two-out single by Brandon Gomez. Dylan Richardson (Randleman, N.C./Randleman/Appalachian St.) got that run back in the top of the ninth for Catawba with a two-out single before Andrew Liberty capped the scoring with home run in the bottom of the ninth for the Sharks.

Albertson, Almond and Richardson each had two hits for Catawba.  Gomez, Daniel Zardon and Andres Visbal had a pair of hits for Nova.  Weiker earned the win and got relief help from Connor Johnson (Rockwell, N.C./E. Rowan), Riley Myers (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury) and Bryan Blanton (Albemarle, N.C./Albemarle).  Alex Mateo took the loss for NSU, allowing three runs off five hits over five innings.

Catawba travels to Belmont Abbey for its next game on Wednesday at 2 pm.
