Indians Shut Down Newberry in 64-45 Rout
NEWBERRY, S.C. -- The Catawba College women's basketball team dominated Newberry College in route to a 64-45 victory in South Atlantic Conference action Wednesday night at Eleazer Arena. The win marks Catawba’s fifth in a row as they improve to 13-10 on the season and 10-7 in conference. The Newberry Wolves drop to 12-11 and 11-6, respectively.
Newberry scored the first basket of the game, but Catawba’s Emma Ucinski drained a three that gave the Lady Indians a lead that would not give up for the rest of the game. The triple ignited a 15-2 run for Catawba giving them as much as an 11 point lead with 2:48 left in the first.
Catawba would use five first half threes to go into the halftime break leading 36-17. Bri Johnson lead the way with a pair of threes and 11 points going into the break. The Lady Indians controlled a 21-16 rebounding advantage to supplement their 46.9% shooting.
Newberry won the third quarter action, reducing the deficit to 13 as Catawba led 41-28. Johnson and the rest of the Lady Indians regained composure in the fourth to cruise to the 19 point victory.
Johnson, the current SAC Player of the Week, led all scorers with 17 points. Terri Rogers and Jada Huntley mirrored double-double efforts with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Catawba finished the night shooting 24-for-56 (42.9%) and 7-for-18 from three point range. The Lady Indians added 9-of-12 from the free throw line.
Newberry, led by Meg Essex’s 14 points, shot 19-of-56 (33.9%) from the field and 5-for-18 from long range. The Wolves were a perfect 2-for-2 from the charity stripe. The Wolves won the second half in rebounding to tie Catawba at 34.
Catawba will finish their road trip on Saturday with a match against Anderson. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
