Baseball Shuts Out Florida Tech 7-0

MELBOURNE, Fla. -- Catawba used another big inning to earn a 7-0 win over host Florida Tech in baseball action on Sunday afternoon at Seminick-Hall Field.  The Catawba Indians level their record at 3-3 on the year, while the Panthers fall to 3-5.

It was a seven-run third that led to Catawba's win on Saturday, Sunday it was a five-run second that gave starter Sean Grant (Statesville, N.C./W. Iredell) and the Indian pitching staff all the runs it needed in posting the first shutout of the season.

A one-out walk and single set up the first run of the second for Catawba.  Grayland Fowler (Moore, S.C./Dorman) put the Indians on top with his single that plated Chance Bowden (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury) from second.  Luke Setzer's (Salisbury, N.C./E. Rowan) bases loaded grounder got two runs in when the throw was misplayed at second.

Will Albertson (Sophia, N.C./Randleman/Campbell) and Dylan Richardson (Randleman, N.C./Randleman/Appalachian St.) plated the final two runs of the inning.  Albertson drove in a run with one of his three singles, while Richardson squeezed home the final run on a bunt up the first base line.

That was more than enough support for Grant and three relievers.  The senior lefty improved to 1-1 as he went seven innings, allowing just two hits with two walks and two strikeouts.  Florida Tech never had more than one runner on in an inning against Grant, who picked off two runners.

The Panthers did get two walks in the eighth of reliever Riley Myers (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury), but Avery Bowles (Thomasville, N.C./E. Davidson) came on to get a strikeout to end the frame.  Bryan Blanton (Albemarle, N.C./Albemarle) issued a leadoff walk in the ninth before retiring the final three batters, two via strikeout.

Albertson led Catawba at the plate with three of the seven hits.  Zach Almond (Richfield, N.C./N. Stanly/UNCG) and Bowden singled home runs in the fourth to make it 7-0.  Setzer scored twice and had a pair of sliding catches on the warning track in right.

Ryan Sinzenich and John Sprowls had the hits for Florida Tech.  Tyler Deal (0-1) took the loss for the Panthers as he allowed all seven runs, four earned, over three and a third innings.  Drew Beyer tossed four and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief, surrendering two hits with eight strikeouts.

Catawba is next set to travel to Winston-Salem State on Wednesday for a 5 pm first pitch.
