Men's Lacrosse Drops Opener at Belmont Abbey

BELMONT, N.C. -- Belmont Abbey rolled to an 18-3 win over visiting Catawba in men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.  It marked the season opener for both squads.

The game was just 2-1 when Connor Sellars scored the second of his first quarter goals with just two ticks left in the opening 15 minutes, giving Belmont Abbey a 3-1 edge.  It was all Crusaders after that as Belmont Abbey netted seven goals in the second quarter to lead 10-1 at the break.

Three man-up goals started the second half for Belmont Abbey, who built a 15-1 edge before a Connor Eakes (Broomfield, Colo./Broomfield) goal stopped the run in the final 30 seconds of the third quarter.  Cole Fanzo (Crofton, Md./S. River) had a late goal for the Indians and Joe Barber (Upper Marlboro, Md./Bishop McNamara) had the first goal in the opening quarter.

Belmont Abbey held a 50-25 edge in shots, while Catawba won the face-off battle by winning 14 of 22.  Eakes was 13-of-19 on face-offs for Catawba.  Ryan Applegate (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra) made 17 saves over his 51 and half minutes of action.  Connor Simonson (Mt. Pleasant, S.C./Wando) picked up one save over the final 8:22.

The Indians will travel to Mount Olive next Saturday for a 1 pm start.
