Indians Split With Barton
SALISBURY, N.C. -- The Catawba College men’s and women’s tennis teams split wins with Barton College Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action at the Johnson Tennis Center. The Catawba women swept the visiting Bulldogs 9-0 to improve to 8-2 on the season. Barton’s women remain winless at 0-5. On the men’s side, Catawba fell 4-5 to the Bulldogs and now stand at 4-5 on the year. The Barton men improve to 2-4 with the other win coming against Catawba in the fall.
Barton managed to play close at #1 doubles as Liz Renteria and Erisa Onchi defeated the Bulldogs’ Smiljana Kljajic and Vanessa Sanoja 8-6. Lauren Sledd and Kristen Rocko claimed an 8-1 win at the second seed while Rachel Rudisill and Maddie Henderson won at #3 by a score of 8-2.
In singles play, Renteria took the #1 win with a pair of 7-6 victories. Onchi defeated Sanoja at the second flight 6-1, 6-2. Barton’s Dana Kelly pushed Catawba’s #3 Henderson to a third set with scores of 7-5, 2-6 and 4-10. Catawba closed the match with strong scores by Rocko, Sledd and Rudisill, respectively. Rocko won 6-3, 6-1, Sledd recorded 6-0, 6-1 scores, and Rudisill claimed a pair of 6-0 victories.
Catawba’s Jack Mordey and Mitchell McDonald grabbed the first point of the day at #1 doubles with an 8-5 win. Barton rallied to take the other doubles matches with scores of 8-4 and 8-5.
Barton’s Jake McCartney defeated Mordey in the top singles matchup 6-2, 6-3. The Indians rallied to claim the next three points and take a 4-3 lead on the day. Catawba’s Lucas Miller won the second flight 7-5, 6-2 while Michael Patch needed a third set to claim his victory. Patch won the #3 position 3-6, 7-5, 10-5. Luca Picci took the final point for the Indians 6-1, 6-2. The final two points of the day went to third sets but Barton would ultimately prevail. At the #5 position, Yaxi Pintado defeated McDonald 6-4, 3-6, 10-7. Daniel Radu tallied the winning point over Iago Montero Nunez with a score of 7-5, 2-6, 10-8.
Catawba will return to the courts on Saturday when they host Newberry in South Atlantic Conference action at 1:00 p.m.
