Fanzo Scores Twice in Men's Lacrosse's Loss to #11 Mount Olive
MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. -- Host Mount Olive, ranked 11th in NCAA II, built a 4-1 halftime lead and used a 4-1 fourth-quarter edge to post an 11-5 victory over Catawba in men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Amon Field. The Trojans improve to 4-0, while the Catawba Indians fall to 0-2.
Mount Olive scored the only two goals of the opening quarter and led 3-0 after Brett Kingston's goal three minutes into the second quarter. Liam Lynch (Marietta Ga./Pope) provided Catawba with its first goal with 6:19 left before the break. Jesse Mitchell would add a goal for the Trojans two minutes before the half for the 4-1 edge.
Cole Fanzo (Crofton, Md./S. River HS) posted back-to-back goals for Catawba in the third quarter to draw the Indians within 5-3. Connor Kennedy (Weddington, N.C./Weddington/Tampa) made it 6-4 with 1:56 remaining in the third, but Luke Dalman scored in the final minute to push Mount Olive up 7-4.
The Trojans pulled away midway through the fourth. A three-goal run over a two-minute span gave the hosts a 10-4 lead with 8:10 remaining. Thatcher Clark made it 11-4 before a final goal from the Indians' Justin Warnock (Jamestown, N.C./SW Guilford) capped the scoring.
Mitchell, Clark, Matt Shields and Jacob Ball each had two goals for Mount Olive. Mitchell added two assists. Fanzo tallied twice for Catawba and Josh Reedy (Lake Mary, Fla./Lake Mary) handed out a pair of assists.
The Trojans held a huge 58-25 edge in shots and also grabbed 25 ground balls to 12 for Catawba. Face-offs were even and Catawba was 1-for-5 on man-up opportunities. Ryan Applegate (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra) collected 19 saves for the Indians.
Catawba will return to action in two weeks, facing Queens for its home opener on March 5 at 1 pm.
