Softball Improves to 9-0 With Wins Over Augusta and #9 Georgia College
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba claimed a pair of wins on Saturday in softball action at Whitley Field as part of the Lenoir-Rhyne/Catawba Invitational. The Catawba Indians topped Augusta 5-1 then upset ninth-ranked Georgia College 3-2. The Catawba Indians remain undefeated at 9-0, while Augusta fell to 5-11 and Georgia College to 12-1.
Carley Tysinger threw a pair of complete games to improve to 5-0 on the year. She struck out 10 in each game to up her career total to 995. In shutting out Belmont Abbey, the senior allowed two hits and walked two. Against Georgia College, Tysinger gave up two runs on three hits with no walks.
Tysinger worked out of a major jam against Georgia College in the seventh. Faith Flanders led off with a single and Lacy Najafi reached on an error. After a strikeout, pinch-runners Emily Robertson and Jessica Hayles moved up to second and third with stolen bases. Tysinger would get Caroline Snider to pop up to first and Morgan Brann was able to double Robertson off third to end the game.
Catawba had taken the lead in the top of the first. Caroline Turner and Kristen Stinnard singled to open the frame and after a strikeout, Gina Gerone singled to load the bases. Katherine Shumaker plated a run on a bunt for a 1-0 lead. Turner would increase the lead to 3-0 with a two-run homer in the second.
A pair of errors by Catawba in the third led to the first Georgia College run. Abi LeRoy cut the margin to 3-2 in the sixth on a RBI ground out. That set the stage for the final inning dramatics.
Stinnard delivered four hits, including a double for Catawba, who had 10 hits, but stranded six. Turner and Leah Huggins each produced two hits. Marisa Boyette (4-1) struck out nine in a complete game loss for the Bobcats.
In the earlier game versus Augusta, Stinnard broke a scoreless tie with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the sixth. Holli Chandler had coaxed a one-out walk and moved to second on a ground out by Turner. Stinnard followed with a ground ball through the right side that plated Chandler. Tysinger followed with a perfectly placed pop up down the left field line to score Stinnard from second to make it 2-0.
Stinnard's hit was the first of the day allowed by Jaguar starter Emily Hittinger (1-1). Hittinger would walk two and strike out one in the loss. Augusta managed seven base runners against Tysinger, but all were stranded.
Catawba finishes off play in the tournament on Sunday in Hickory, N.C., against Columbus State at 3 pm. The Lady Indians will be trying to match the school record of 10 consecutive wins.
