Last Minute Free Throws Secure 66-50 Win Over Brevard
SALISBURY, N.C. -- The Catawba College women's basketball team finished out the home portion 2015-16 regular season with a 66-50 victory over Brevard College in South Atlantic Conference action Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The win lifts Catawba to 15-11 overall and 12-8 in the conference. The loss for Brevard marks their 20th straight as they stand at 1-23 on the year and 0-20 in the SAC.
The Lady Indians suffered a slow first half to the game as the teams went into halftime with the score 23-22 in favor of Catawba. At the end of the first quarter and beginning of the second, Catawba went on an 8-0 run over a span of 6:33.
By the end of the thir quarter the teams still struggled to score and separate from each other which led to a Catawba lead of 37-36 going into the final period of play. In the fourth quarter, however, Catawba saw a lot of action from the free throw line, resulting in a 15 point diffential in the quarter. The Lady Indians went 12-for-12 from the charity stripe over the final two minutes equating to a 14-5 run.
The Lady Indians were led by a double-double afternoon from Jada Huntley who scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Bri Johnson and Khadijah Brown added 11 points each to the winning effort. Johnson fell a rebound shy of a double-double for the day.
The Indians experienced lower than usual success as they went just 22-for-68 (32.4%) from the field and a mere 3-for-19 from long range. Catawba had no trouble converting from the free throw line as they made 19-of-23.
Madison Lenox's 14 points helped the Tornados stay in the game as she led the team in scoring. Shelby Wolfe controlled the boards with nine rebounds for the team. Catawba, however, outrebounded the Tornados 53-37.
Brevard shot 19-for-60 (31.7%) overall and 6-for-27 from three point range. The Tornados did not see much action from the free throw line, but they were able to go 6-for-8.
Catawba will finish out the regular season on the road as they travel to Wingate on Wednesday. Game time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
