SALISBURY, N.C. -- Shippensburg claimed a win in the final game of a three-game baseball series against ABCA fifth-ranked Catawba with an 8-5 victory on Sunday afternoon at Newman Park.   The Raiders improve to 3-4, while the Catawba Indians fall to 5-4.

The Raiders built a 6-1 lead after four innings and held off a Catawba comeback.  Mike Marcinko led off the game with home run and finished with four hits.  Dalton Hoiles also had a homer among his three hits.

Kyle Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Dudley) hit a pair of home runs for Catawba.  Luke Setzer (Salisbury, N.C./E. Rowan) had a triple and a double, while Chance Bowden (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury) also had two hits.

Marcinko and Hoiles had solo shots for Shippensburg in the first and Hoiles added a two-run double in the third to push the lead to 5-1.  Nick Spangler singled home Marcinko to make it 6-1 in the fourth.

A single by Bowden and double by Emmitt Carden (Whispering Pines, N.C./Union Pines) led to an RBI ground out by Jake Kimble (Concord, N.C./Mt. Pleasant/Liberty) to make it 6-2 in the fifth.  Smith, who had hit a solo home run in the second, connected on a two-run homer in the sixth to bring Catawba within 6-4.

Shippensburg answered in the seventh as the Raiders benefited from a Catawba error to score twice and take an 8-4 edge.  The Indians inched closer in their seventh as Dylan Richardson (Randleman, N.C./Randleman/Appalachian St.) singled home a run with two outs, but Catawba stranded two and only got one more base runner the rest of the way.

Rich Michaud evened his record at 1-1 as he pitched into the seventh.  He allowed four runs on six hits over his six and a third innings with three strikeouts.  Tyler Butcher bridged the gap to the ninth for closer Josh Kutchey, who nailed down his third save.  He allowed a two-out double to Setzer, but struck out the side.

Catawba is scheduled to play at Winston-Salem State on Wednesday at 5 pm before returning home to open conference play on Friday at 6 pm versus Newberry.
