Tysinger Reaches 1,000 Career Strikeouts as Softball Goes to 10-0
HICKORY, N.C. -- Senior Carley Tysinger went over 1,000 career strikeouts as Catawba remained undefeated with a 5-0 victory over Columbus State on Sunday afternoon at Bears Field on the campus of Lenoir-Rhyne University in the Lenoir-Rhyne/Catawba Invitational. The Catawba Indians improve to 10-0, matching the school record for consecutive wins, while the Cougars fall to 10-7.
Tysinger notched her 1,000th strikeout when she fanned Keeli Waugh to start the sixth inning. Gina Gerone and Katherine Shumaker provided plenty of offense, combining for five hits and three RBI. Leah Huggins also had two hits and Caroline Turner drove in a run and scored twice.
Gerone put Catawba on top as her single plated Turner, who had walked to leadoff the bottom of the first. In the fourth, the Lady Indians doubled the lead after Gerone led off with a triple and Shumaker followed with a double.
Shumaker added another RBI with a single in the fifth and the Lady Indians tacked on two more in the sixth on RBI hits from Turner and Kristen Stinnard. Gerone went 3-for-3 on the day.
Tysinger sat down the first 18 batters she faced in taking a perfect game to the seventh. She hit Katie White to start the seventh to end the bid for the school's first perfect game and Callie Star broke up the no-hitter with a one-out single. Tysinger improved to 6-0, striking out seven and allowing just the two base runners.
Catawba is next scheduled to travel to Limestone on Wednesday for a 1:30 pm doubleheader.
