Catawba Triumphs Over Lees-McRae in 7-2 Victory

SALISBURY, N.C. -- The Catawba College tennis teams claimed a pair of victories over Lees-McRae College Friday afternoon at the Johnson Tennis Center. The Catawba Lady Indians earned a 9-0 shutout to advance to 9-3 on the season.  The Catawba men won 7-2 and advance to 5-6 overall. Lees-McRae’s women now stand at 0-3 and the men 0-4.

The Lady Indians came out swinging as they swept the doubles matches, including an 8-0 victory by Maddie Henderson and Rachel Rudisill at the #3 position. Liz Renteria took a win at the top singles with scores of 6-3, 6-1. At the #2 position, Catawba’s Erisa Onchi gave up just one point in a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Henderson and Rocko had the toughest outings of the day at the #3 and #4 seeds, respectively. Henderson won 6-4, 6-1 while Rocko went to 7-6, 6-2. Lauren Sledd shutout her opponent in the first set at the #5 spot before closing out with a 6-3 win. Rudisill coasted to 6-0 wins and secured her day without surrendering a single point.

On the men’s side, the Catawba men recorded wins at the top two doubles. Lees-McRae bounced back with an 8-1 victory at the third flight over Brad Smethurst and Aaron Vanhorenbeck.

In singles play, the Bobcat’s lone point came at the top spot when Joao Araujo defeated Jack Mordey 6-2, 6-3. Lucas Miller regained the momentum for Catawba with 6-0, 7-5 wins at the #2 position and Michael Patch added 6-4, 6-1 wins to take the point at #3. Lucca Picca finished the afternoon with a pair of 6-1 victories to secure the win for Catawba at the #4 position. At the #5 seed, Mitchell McDonald claimed wins of 6-2, 6-3 before Iago Montero Nunez ended the day with two 6-0 shutouts.

Catawba will return to conference play on Saturday as the Indians host Anderson for a 1:00 p.m. match.
